ADF Attack in Eastern DR Congo Leaves Five Civilians Dead
The attack took place on Friday in Beni territory, located in North Kivu province.
A provincial official, Elie Mbafumoja, told reporters in Beni that the assailants “executed their victims using knives and firearms.”
He added, “For the moment, the provisional death toll is five. But the death toll could rise because many civilians who carry out their activities in the targeted village of Kididiwe are missing.” The attackers reportedly looted property before fleeing the area.
According to local reports, the ADF has repeatedly targeted civilians in the Beni region. Since early June, suspected members of the group are said to have carried out six separate attacks, leaving more than 50 people dead and dozens abducted.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that escalating violence in eastern Congo could increase the risk of further spread of the Ebola virus disease in the region.
